Personal Support Worker

You are here

A Personal Support Worker (PSW) provides assistance with a client’s daily living activities, their personal care and hygiene, mobility, and helping with the management of household activities.  If you care about helping people and are looking to start your career in the growing healthcare industry, consider training as a PSW at triOS College.

PSW Program Overview

The PSW diploma program will provide you with the clinical skills needed to work as a Personal Support Worker in Ontario.  The program covers topics such as:

  • Anatomy and Physiology - Basics such as the muscular-skeletal, digestive, urinary, integumentary, reproductive, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, and endocrine systems
  • Cognitive and Mental Health Issues and Brain Injuries and how to provide care
  • CPR and First Aid - Upon successful completion of this course, students will achieve the Standard Level First Aid and Healthcare Provider (BLS-Basic Life Support) Level CPR.
  • Assisting the Dying Person – Students will examine personal beliefs about illness and dying and how to provide support to the dying. Specific approaches within the scope of the support worker to reduce discomfort or pain within the context of a plan of support care are covered
  • Assisting with Medications and Administration of Insulin Injections
  • How to identify possible signs of family violence and abuse as well as the appropriate actions to be taken
  • Nutrition and Hydration - Students will learn how to help their clients with their nutritional needs that include balanced nutrition plans, menus, safe handling of food, storage, and specific cooking techniques
  • Household Management
  • Safety and Mobility - Personal Support Workers and Home Support Workers must provide assistance in a safe, effective manner to their clients. This includes ensuring the use of safe equipment, proper transferring and lifting techniques, and infection control methods

triOS College utilizes the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) approved personal support worker curriculum. Courses taught in classrooms simulate real-world healthcare settings that include hospital beds, wheelchairs and other equipment used in performing your PSW duties.* You will also perform a 12-week clinical work practicum in a community long-term care facility.

What is Hybrid Learning

Hybrid learning merges the ease and comfort of attending classes remotely with the in-person practical application of theories and techniques taught in class.

Your instructor will discuss fundamental concepts remotely through real-time video chat over the Internet at specified times. Then when the practical application starts, expect to attend on-campus classes for face-to-face learning.

Most of triOS Colleges hybrid programs fall under their Healthcare faculty, which necessitates the application and execution of techniques.

What does hybrid learning look like?

  • Everyone follows the same schedule at the same time.
  • Class discussions occur via online video conferencing.
  • Practical application and learning of hands-on techniques occur in person.
  • Your instructor will conduct individual follow-ups.
  • All discussions will be guided by your instructor.
  • Learn and master the use of new online technology such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams for future work scenarios.
  • You are not left alone. Your instructor will guide you throughout the learning process.

*Not all programs are available by hybrid learning.

Contact triOS College to learn about the technology requirements.
