College of Nursing

You are here

Nursing is one of the most respected professions and it provides people with the opportunity to care for others. After graduation, pre-licensure programs require a certification exam in order to practice as licensed professionals in their respective degrees.

College of Nursing Programs

Sullivan University’s College of Nursing consists of Practical Nursing, Associate of Science in Nursing, Bridge from Licensed Practical Nursing to Registered Nursing (LPN-RN), and a bridge from Registered Nursing to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN).

Two simulation labs, a simulation man or “sim-man”, enables students to simulate acute care scenarios and a simulation mom or “sim-mom” enables students to simulate difficult birthing scenarios such as high-risk and low risk situations. There are also 3 skills labs.

The College of Nursing is approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing in addition to the University’s SACSCOC accreditation.

Practical Nursing Diploma

The Practical Nursing program prepares graduates to be employed within the discipline of nursing, in a variety of structured health care settings under the supervision of the registered nurse or physician.

After successful program completion, graduates are eligible to apply to a state board of nursing for licensure by examination. Upon licensure, the graduate may be employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and practice to the scope allowed by law. A student will gain on-the-job experience in the clinical phases of nursing. This is accomplished in a variety of health care facilities under the supervision of qualified nursing faculty. This program is offered in both the day and evening divisions.

Nursing

One of the most popular medical careers, nursing offers you a chance to work in hospitals or doctor’s offices. A nurse works under the direction of a doctor or a nurse practitioner and the main duties are to dispense medication, start IVs, take vital signs, operate some medical equipment and directly care for patients. Nurses do not generally diagnose conditions, but may report patient symptoms or changes in conditions to doctors.

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing (A.A.S.) program enables Licensed Practical Nurses the opportunity to pursue the role of the professional registered nurse. Core components of the program of study include professional behaviors, communication, assessment, clinical decision making, evidence-based practice, caring interventions, teaching and learning, collaboration with members of the healthcare team, and the management of patient care.

Graduates of the program are eligible to apply to the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to sit for the exam and to become a registered nurse.
