As Canada's population continues to age, the need for trained Nurse’s Aides will continue to grow. As many health care facilities face a shortage of doctors and nurses, many measures have been taken to ensure that these health care professionals focus primarily on activities that they are authorized to perform. Nurse’s Aides provide a variety of care for the elderly, acute or chronically ill and those who have special needs and with patients living with mental health issues. Nurse’s Aides will find employment in hospitals, long term care facilities, residential and extended care facilities, nursing care facilities and long term care facilities along with agencies that provide home care services to people recovering from surgery and those that provide care for senior citizens and people with disabilities.
Nurse’s Aide students will typically learn medical terminology, human anatomy, chronic conditions and palliative care along with accountable and responsible care, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, standard first aid and safe patient handling including transfer techniques, wheelchair safety, mechanical lifting and other specialized care skills.
Many Nurse’s Aide programs will also provide clinical placements to help the student gain hands on experiences.
