T he need for trained Heath Care Aides (HCA) will continue to grow to care for the aging population. Heath Care Aides also known as Residential Care Attendants (RCA), Care Aides, Health Care Assistants or Personal Support Workers (PSWs), are an important part of the health care team providing care for the elderly, acute or chronically ill, those who have special needs and with patients living with mental health issues.
A Health Care Aide Course at a career college teaches students to identify and properly respond to both the patient's physical as well as emotional needs. The health care aide courses also teach students how to promote healthy physical and mental activity suitable to the specific patient. HCA students will typically learn medical terminology, human anatomy, about chronic conditions and palliative care, along with accountable and responsible care, transfer techniques, wheelchair safety, mechanical lifting and other specialized care skills.
Many HCA programs will also provide clinical placements to help the student gain hands on experiences.
The Health Information Management (HIM) program at Anderson College in London, Ontario, offers classes starting throughout the year.
