VanArts, founded in 1995 with Academy-Award winning animator/director Lee Mishkin as its founding program director, offers highly focused diploma programs devised to prepare students for work in areas of media arts such Visual Effects Production, Game Art & Design, Character Animation, Professional Photography, Acting for Film & Television, Web Development and Broadcasting.

Programs at VanArts

2D/3D Character Animation



VanArts’ Character Animation diploma program focuses on character animation through body mechanics and performance, with a strong foundation in modeling, lighting, character building and art direction. 

VanArts is the “go-to school” for training in the industry-standard software MAYA for 3D and Toon Boom's HARMONY for 2D. Courses in story, visual language and life drawing are all taught by award-winning faculty who have experience working at studios such as Disney, Dreamworks and Industrial Light & Magic.

Acting for Film & Television



If you are passionate and dedicated to studying acting – the acting program at the William Davis Centre for Actors' Study at VanArts is for you. It is a one-year conservatory program designed to both nurture and challenge you as an aspiring actor. 

A maximum of 16 students are selected each year to study directly with some of the best professionals in the industry; actors who have starred in features and TV series such as The X-Files, Supernatural, Continuum, Motive, Bates Motel, Battlestar Galactica, Cut Bank, Final Destination, TRON: Legacy and many more.

Broadcasting & Online Media



VanArts’ one-year broadcasting program is made for media careers of the 21st century. You will develop and hone your communication and broadcast skills by going on the air every day at VanArts’ campus radio station. At VanArts you will learn how to be a talented podcaster, a YouTube video personality, a social media marketer and how to create videos that go viral.

Professional Photography



The Professional Photography program at VanArts is Vancouver’s only intensive one-year program that is designed to enable you to master the technical, creative and business skills essential to working as a professional photographer. A MacBook Pro and software are included with tuition.

Game Art & Design



The Game Art & Design diploma program at VanArts is a hybrid of traditional and digital art, starting with foundational skills and proceeding to specialization. Courses designed and taught by industry leaders prepare you for work in 2D/3D environments, character modeling, lighting, texturing, interface design and concept development. The courses enable you to focus your craft in creating concept art and assets for the film, game and television industries, with an equal emphasis on art development for mobile gaming and 3D console games.

Visual Effects (Film & TV)



VanArts Visual Effects for Film & Television program is a top destination for training in this rapidly growing field. VanArts has been recognized by SideFX Software, as a certified Houdini Training Partner.  You’ll also learn industry tools such as MAYA and Nuke.

Web Development & Interactive Design

VanArts offers a 40-40-20 split between web design, programming and business development.  Your hands-on courses are based on current and future trends for web and mobile development and design.


VanArts is PTIB (Private Training Institutions Branch) designated and has also been awarded an Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation by the province of BC.
