Medical Office Administrators continue to be in High Demand

Medical Office Administrators or MOAs are trained to work in a variety of health care facilities.  These facilities typically range from physician's offices, single or multi specialty clinics to hospital settings.  MOAs training usually include medical terminology, body systems and medical office practices and procedures.  (For a full description of duties click here).

Medical Office Administrators are also referred to as Medical Office Assistants, Medical Secretaries, which is a term from the 90s along with Ward Secretaries which is also an older reference.

Job opportunities will become available as medical office assistants and administrators retire over the next few years.  According to Service Canada 62.6% of this group of workers are between 45 and 64 years of age presenting a large opportunity for those just entering the field.  Other than natural retirement, the career is relatively stable considering the aging population and the growing need for health related services.

In reviewing census data from 2006 almost all medical office administrators worked in the health care sector (95%), the majority of them in hospitals (51%).  The next largest group were found in offices of physicians (29%) and the last group in local community service centres (7%).
