What is Interior Decorating?

The terms interior decorating and interior design are often used interchangeably, but they differ in critical ways.

Interior decorating involves creatively planning living and business spaces using color, paint, lighting, window coverings, furniture, and artwork to create comfortable yet, functional spaces that fit their clients' needs.  Interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design.

Being an Interior Decorator allows you to use your creativity to make homes, businesses and public interiors beautiful and comfortable.

What do Interior Decorators Do?

  • Interior Decorators collaborate with their clients to understand their preferences, goals and budgets
  • Analyze client’s goals to develop a decorating proposal
  • Offer decoration suggestions and ideas within the client’s budget
  • Create drawings so clients have a visual image of the ideas
  • Recommend the best materials and decorations to create and enhance the interior environment to meet the desired expectations of what atmosphere the client wishes to create
