What is Animation?

As an animator, Walt Disney brought characters to life that are still making children laugh today. But what is animation, and how is it accomplished?

A pure definition could be summed up as the process of making still images appear to be in motion by rapidly transitioning them in sequence. Originally, this was done by photographing each painstakingly, drawn image and creating a reel that could then be used to show them in motion. Luckily there is software to assist animators today that makes the process much more efficient. The software however, doesn't take the place of an artist.

Skills needed for an animation career?

  • The ability to draw or sketch the images that are intended for animation is a necessity, whether it is with charcoal and pad or a mouse and keyboard, having talent and a steady hand are prerequisites.
  • Be highly creative and imaginative and be able to execute concepts effectively
  • Have an eye for detail
  • Self-motivated
  • Able to Multi-task
  • Work well with others as part of a team
  • Good listening skills
